Guinea Hens & Lyme Disease Prevention

Lyme disease is a serious and growing threat in Northern New York. Transmitted by black-legged ticks (deer ticks), it affects humans, dogs, livestock, and wildlife alike — and our property and rescue animals are not immune.

Guinea fowl are nature's answer. A single guinea hen can eat hundreds of ticks per day, dramatically reducing tick populations on and around the property without chemicals or pesticides.

This is a secondary mission of the Heron Bay Cliffs Rescue & Rehab Center — protecting the health of our animals, our volunteers, and the surrounding community through natural, sustainable tick management.

Once the orchard is fenced and the flock is re-established, our guineas will roam the property year-round providing continuous, chemical-free Lyme prevention.

Built for the Orchard

The new poultry operation won't just share land with the orchard — it will be integrated inside it. Once the orchard is planted and fenced, the flock will be housed within the orchard perimeter, creating a closed-loop system that benefits both.

This is why poultry operations are paused until the orchard is ready. The two programs are designed to work together — not separately.

  • Chickens and guineas eat insects, grubs, and pests that damage fruit trees
  • Dropped and damaged fruit is consumed by the flock rather than rotting
  • Droppings naturally fertilize orchard soil
  • Guinea hens suppress ticks throughout the orchard and surrounding property
  • Turkeys clear undergrowth and manage grass between tree rows

Orchard + Poultry

A closed-loop system where the poultry feeds the trees and the trees feed the poultry — reducing costs and chemical inputs across the whole operation.
